                     WBSA Sixteenth Rendezvous - October 5 - 7, 2009

2009 marked the 16th year the Whitby - Brewer owners have met for the Association rendezvous.

Our special thanks to the West River Sailing Club.  Because we chose to meet during the week so as not to interfere with their weekend sailing program, we were able to rent their facility for our use. This is a great venue which enables us to meet inside, and socialize outside when the weather co-operates, which it did so beautifully this year.

For the record 16 boats were accommodated on the dock, rafted, or anchored out;   65 people registered, including some new members and a few who are looking for a Whitby or a Brewer.

Thanks are due to the Dock Masters, Judy and Bill Speary (“Janus”) and Bob Smith, American Diesel.  It is interesting to note that guests came from as far afield as Florida, Oregon and Canada, as well as locally.

The organizing committee lined up an amazing and diversified group of speakers.  Thanks are due for their input and the time they took to answer our myriad of questions.  A copy of the Rendezvous Agenda follows.

From the opening session and throughout the following days a great deal of association business took place.  We discussed, and drafted, a “Mission Statement,” as well as the format for the new website.  Both items were finalized and adopted.

Also as part of the business meeting, we adopted a new name, “The Whitby Brewer Sailboat Association,” and established the position of Association Coordinator.  John Cece was appointed coordinator for the forthcoming year.  By a consensus of the majority present next year’s rendezvous will again be held prior to the United States Sailboat Show in October…, i.e., 4, 5, 6 October 2010.

So wraps up another successful rendezvous. We remember well, the delicious food, great camaraderie and participation by everybody. Thanks should go out to a lot of people, too many to mention, but you know who you are, but one we should mention is Mary Cece.  The amount of time she spent organizing, shopping and making sure everything went smoothly cannot be imagined.

One more thing - the new website is up and running.  We invite you to visit it and use it.

 Respectfully submitted:

Doris Servais FOXFIRE II (W42 #174)

John Cece        MENEHUNE (W42 #195)

The Association Rendezvous was held on 4, 5, 6 Oct, in Galesville, MD.  Although 17 boats were expected, the nasty East Coast weather forced several to adjust their plans.....and return home, and/or arrive after the rendezvous.  Nevertheless, there were 9 boats in attendance.  There were some 63 people who passed through the meetings, with an average of 55 in attendance at all times.

The program consisted of professional as well as owner-presentations.  The presentations were interspersed with good food (thanks to Mary and all of the volunteer galley help), good drink, boat visiting, social hours, and plenty of sea stories, some of which were true!

During the brief business meeting, all agreed to meet, again, next year on the several days preceding the Boat Show.

Respectfully,

John

20th Association Rendezvous - October 7, 8 & 9 2013

A Huge Success

Group photo at 2013 Annual RendezvousThe Association holds a "sail-in" or "drive-in" rendezvous each year. All interested in Whitby and Brewer sail boats are invited to attend.

This year 44 attendees shared their enthusiasm for our Ted Brewer designed sailboats.  Folks arrived by both water and land.  Due to weather conditions, a few boats remained at the West River Sailing Club for several extra days.  According to John Cece, this was very enjoyable as it prolonged the get together.  Thank-you John for travelling to the Club to open the facility for our members.

The presentations focused on many areas of interest, from great places to visit, how to be comfortable while underway, to some maintenance topics.

Cindy Ann Bowers was elected President, replacing George Chamberlain.  Thanks to George for his guidanace last year and to Cindy for taking on the extra duties of coordinator for the group.

Gerry O'Donoghue spent countless hours arranging the event.  Great job Gerry!

Many volunteers signed up to help complete the myriad of tasks involved with hosting an event this large.  Thanks to all who lent a hand!

Thanks also to all who participated for making this another great event.

A presentation from the 2011 rendezvous on Whitby Ideas - Begged, Borrowed, and Stolen

2014 Upper Chesapeake Rendezvous Recap

The 21st Whitby Brewer Association Rendezvous was held on October 6, 7, 8 at (the beautiful) West River Sailing Club in Galesville, MD. There were six boats at the dock: Morning Light, Wild Oats, Allegria, Island Time, Joie de Vivre and Shooting Star. There were 46 sailors in attendance. Each day was filled with socializing, presentations, boat visits and good food.

The following presentations were given:

Dalton Williams - Wifi for Boats

Dee Strickland (Allegria) - Shafted in the Jumentos

Business meeting:

Terry Temperly delivered the Financial Report for the past year (to be posted separately). The funds in the account are to be used for expenses related to the maintenance of the WBS website. The Rendezvous is funded completely by the attendees. There was a small surplus of funds from this year's Rendezvous due to additional people signing up late. A motion was made and passed to add this surplus to the fund for website maintenance. Additional donations were also made to the website fund, as it was pointed out that the website is our only asset and it assists owners in learning about their boats and connecting with others. It is also a strong reason why our boats have value on the open market because potential buyers know there is an active community for support on issues.

There are currently no membership dues being collected. Dues may be instituted in the future if the website needs more funds.

Cindy Ann Bowers reported on the social initiative started last year, to increase the number and regions where Whitby Brewer meet ups occur. Currently, the Association Rendezvous is the only gathering with the "Rendezvous" name due to the presence of the business meeting and the election of officers. Other social gatherings will use the term "Meet up". The website forum category "Getting Together" was launched last year and provides a place for meet up planning, photos and descriptions of meet ups. Several meet ups were held and documented last year, in Miami, Jacksonville, Vero Beach, and the Bahamas. Tools for facilitating meet ups were discussed, including the Whitby 42 Yachts FaceBook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/251728048880/), Cruiseheimers Net (http://www.bigdumboat.com/network.html) and Active Captain e-boat cards (http://www.eboatcards.com).

Brief plans for next year's Rendezvous were discussed. The West River Sailing Club is a prime facility in a good location and would be the first choice if John Cece can secure the Club again. We discussed moving the registration deadline to August first with an option for a partial refund for cancellation and a late fee, to encourage attendees to sign up early enough that we can pay for the food deposit.

Officer elections were held. All of the 2013-2014 officers were willing to serve another year, so elections went along quickly.
