We had a leaky rudder post as you can see from the previous posts. We tightened the brass triangular fitting and it still leaked. It turned out to be leaking up between the Fiberglas sleeve and the brass fitting. I had to have the rudder pulled on the hard and have the fiberglass repaired .

We had the same problem on Baleia. It was slightly leaking when there was pressure on the rudder post, nothing sitting still. I changed the packing and that is it. No longer problems since three years.

Problem has been getting the lock nut to move. I finally madeup a 2.5 inch wrench with a short throw and was able the free the locknut. Now to remove the rest of the stuff so that i can replace the packing.

I have a WB 42 #76 and I can see the rudder post wabble about a 1/16 of an inch foward and aft and left to right when underway.  The rudder was out in 2016 I dropped it and ispected everything nothing appeared worn.  The rudder shaft looked perfect.  I restuffed the gland and as always no leaking while moored however as soon as I got underway the shaft shifting a little and a steady stream of water flowed into the bildge.
The info on replacing rudder packing is extensive but I did not see that anyone has seen their rudder shaft move a little from side to side while underway.  The stream of water has been happening for 17 years that I know of.  After my last Atlantic crossing I leeked about the same as before.
Any on else have wobbly rudder shaft or a flow of water (not a drip) from the rudder gland?

yeah mine had about that amount of play in it and leaked substantially while underway.. i just tightened up the gland packing nut and both issues went away.
