Deck attachment was created by TOM PALLEN
As I understand it, decks on Whitby's are attached with either pop rivets or through bolted. Is there a way to determine which method was used on a particular boat without an actual examination? Perhaps manufacturing changes over the years? Appreciate any information you might have.

You are yet another victim of a false urban legend. Many years ago somebody saw pop rivets and assumed that was the ONLY attachment method. In reality their inspection was incomplete, they failed to see the bolts that are also there. Pop rivets were a temporary "hold in place" until the Bolts were added. I have photos of bolts on my boat. If you dig around in the Forum history, much has been written about this.

Terry, thanks for the reply. I'm new to the forum so I'll try to figure out where the history archive is and go thru it.

I realise this thread is old but for anyone who might be looking for this information. Hull no.55 was just riveted, definitely no bolts.

@ Ryan Nilsson   What’s holding the toe rail on? I don't think it's rivets. Please check.

Please take a look at the article on re-bedding the cap rail. Self-tapping screws, recessed in the wood with bungs, we’re used to hold the cap rail in place. Pictures are included in the article. The deck to hull joint is explained.

As Deb said, originally rivets for the hull to deck joint and screws for the cap rail... No.55 is now 14g screws for the cap rail and 5/16 bolts for the deck joint.

Also note that when the deck was placed on the hull it was ‘glued’ on with resin. The reason for the pop rivets was to hold it in place while it was curing. The reason for the thru-bolts was increased stability. The pop rivets were never intended as an end-all attachment solution.

Question “ No.55 is now 14g screws for the cap rail and 5/16 bolts for the deck joint.”

Are you saying it was not previously bolted or screwed?

(Maybe I’m over-reading this.)

Steve,
i think your over reading into this.. i can't be any clearer...

Deb,
If the rivets were just used to hold the joint together while being glued it seems pretty strange that there was rivets every inch or two.. just an observation.
I had a ship run into me and tore apart the joint, I was happy to have the rivets there.
