Main Sheet Arrangement

Has anyone installed a traveler for the main sheet on a Whitby 42?  I am considering adding one to Alembic.  It seem fairly tight between the Mizzen mast support and the edge of the aft cabin coach roof.  I am fine with obstructing the aft cabin companion way.  For the limited amount we use this access, I am fine with climbing over a traveler.

Thanks,
Bill Weigel

We added a traveler to the main in 2010. Its been working great for us. We also never use the aft companionway for egress so no loss for us. It was installed by Mac Sails in Stewart, FL. It is raised up about 6" off the deck and the cross bar has a custom bend to match the curve of the deck. Our main boom has a fixed boom strut so the only purpose for us was to enable the main sheet to clear the sides of the enclosure.

My aft deck is currently under reconstruction and the hardware is removed. But I'll see if I can find a picture or two.

i have a 12.8... has anyone moved the main sheet forward to the main cabin roof?...
having the sheet in the cockpit is a hazard and "in-the-way"...
since i have a in the mast furling and loose footed i would think the strain on the boom would be minimal
and by using multiple points of attachment on the boom, the load would distributed...

and as a ketch has anyone shortened the mizzen boom so as not to over hang the transom and clear it for a vane and or arch...
i know some have cape horn vane and ask how it has worked..

Mac Sails told me that a mid-boom sheeting arrangement would not be far enough aft. So when they installed our traveller they routed the main sheet from the aft end the boom, forward under the boom to the base of the mast, then aft along the deck to the front of the cockpit. Then they installed a winch on the cabin top next to the forward companionway.

I am glad to hear that your main sheet traveler is working out. I am also intrigued by the main sheet arrangement running forward to the mast and then back along the deck.

One quick follow-up. We have the factory located main sheet winch on the pad on the port side of the aft cabin top. Does the main sheet traveler interfere with this winch location?

thanks scott... i'll have to think about that.. it would seem the sheet angles would be heavily loaded close hauled.... i think a vang would be absolutely necessary..
