Has anyone added a hydraulic AP to the hydraulic steering system? Looking at the installation instruction for RM unit it states that the helm pump needs to have check valves in it. If not, another piece of equipment is needed. So the question is, does the helm pump have check valves in it?

Thanks,

Bob

When we added the B&G autopilot, the installers used the existing pump. It was controlled by an old Benmar. The modern pilots have “high current” controls for the old pumps. The question of check valves didn’t come up.

If it already had a hydraulic AP then that issue would have been resolved at the time it was installed. Current "new" boat has a wheel pilot, so it would be a completely new install.

I am looking to upgrade the AP on a W42. Can you share the model of B&G that you are using and are you happy with it and the capacity of the pump if you know it?

Thanks,

Rafi.
