TOPIC: Replacing Fuel Sensing Unit

Replacing Fuel Sensing Unit 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Hello All - Hope to see you at the Rendezvous - I need to replace my fuel level sensing unit and it appears to be based on the depth of the fuel tank.
I do not want to remove the existing one until I have a replacement - so does anyone know the depth of the existing port and starboard tanks?
Additionally, does anyone have a recommendation for a sending unit?
Thanks for the help

As far as the Starboard tank is concerned I ended up with a 24" sender. Keep in mind that I redesigned my tank and chopped the pointy bottom off.
Scroll down on the following link and will you will find the original dimensions for my old tank. My boat never had a port fuel tank.

I can strongly recommend WEMA USA in Fort Lauderdale for their excellent SS senders. (Don't forget to use code 551 when you checkout to get 30% off).

As it turns out one of our members has already measured our tanks for us.

"Using the same dipstick for both port and starboard saddle tanks which measure a total of 27 inches from bottom to top where I take my readings, I remove the round fuel sender plate and slide it to one side while I dip a 36 inch dowel into the opening on my fuel tank, keeping the dowel as vertical as possible while letting it slide all the way to the bottom."

This was taken from the article about fuel tanks that is in the archive.

As far as the type of sending unit I prefer the solid rod type as opposed to the swing arm. The swing arm is usually inaccurate and doesn't last a long time due to the fact the rheostat burns out as it uses the fuel to cool it and once you are below 1/2 full the rheostat is exposed, and the fuel will no longer cool it.

I just had a new port tank made for my 1978 w42 "Ranger" as part of her refit. This boat also had no port tank, as I purchased it as third owner . Someone along the way removed it and plugged thwe hole in the deck. The new tank fills the dimensions Douglass sent pictures from a destroyed hull. The sender and tank was supplied by Patriot tank Co. in Forked River, N.J. I can furnish the # any time. The sender is a rod style and is well made. The refit of Ranger is coming along . I opted to do as much as time permitted, without giving up too much of the sailing season. I'm hoping to bring her to the Rendezvous, but time and weather may only allow me to drive to attend. I am very pleased with the vessel and can't waite to finish her complete refit. This owners group is a great group of new friends. Thanks , Dave. By the way any owner needing technical assistance on engine , hull, power train issues can feel free to contact me anytime by calling Douglas for my cell #. Best of luck to all.

Lew,
I have only seen the "swing arm" senders so can you recommend a manufacturer and source for the solid rod type? I just replaced both port and starboard (center tank is closed off) senders with swing arm units. Thanks for your help!
