ICW: Savannah to South Florida 3 Years, 2 Months ago
Greetings,

We are about to start south on the ICW after having some minor repairs completed at Sail Harbor Marina on Taylor Creek, south of Thunderbolt.

Would appreciate any recommendations/suggestions from anybody who has experience on ICW south of Savannah to the Keys, specifically any recommended anchorages or marinas. or anything a first timer would find helpful.

There are many great places.

Are you going inside or outside?

South of Savannah we've enjoyed Walburg Creek, Fort Fernandina, Cumberland Island, St. Marys....are all nice places to visit.

Do you have some cruising guides like Skipper Bob's Anchorages along the ICW? Another good one for further south is Managing the Waterway: Biscayne Bay to the Dry Tortugas - www.managingthewaterway.com/keys-detail

Hi Greg, Thanks for the quick response.

We plan on inside. Yes, I have the Skipper Bob pubs (marinas and anchorages) as well as the Waterway Guides. And the necessary charts. I've got a rough plan from here to Brunswick/Jeckel Island on the ICW based on the pubs and charts.

Walburg Creek looks interesting. We may give it a try if we make it that far south on day 1!!

Would be grateful if anything else comes to mind.

Regards
Clark

Hi Clark,
Do take a look at the "Managing the Waterway" guide or find another that covers what you'll encounter south of Miami. We feel the ICW world changes quite a bit and the waterway guides were not helpful. If memory serves me correctly, Skipper Bob wasn't too helpful south of Miami either...Could be wrong. as the book is not at hand tonight.

I trust that you are making your way south...

Titusville, the City Marina.

Melbourne for the Seven Seas Cruising Association Gam (was this past weekend).

Palm Beach area. Lake Worth for a free anchorage. You will find quite a few other cruisers in this area. At the north end of the lake is a spot to bring your dinghy up, with walking access to groceries/restuarants, etc. Make sure to lock your motor, and bring a cable and lock for your dink. Unfortunate.

Fort Lauderdale area has mooring balls just south of the Las Olas Bridge, and on the north side of the bridge, a marina. A favorite, well protected spot is Lake Sylvia. Tricky to get into, so HUG the east edge of the entrance channel. You can stay there for a couple of days. Access to shore is difficult, but the Raw Bar at the end of 15th Street will let you park your dink for a charge, that will be applied to your meal if you chose to eat/drink there. That will give you access to Winn Dixie, a good Ace Hardware, and Liquor Stores. A bit further of a walk is Publix and Bluewater Books and Charts.

Miami, watch the Julia Tuttle Bridge, we hit it once (claims 56' of clearance), so we always go outside between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. If you do go on the inside, do that bridge at a low tide, and watch your markers at Haul Over Inlet. There is a lot of shoaling in that area.

We really like anchoring in front of the old stadium on Virginia Key (just north of the Rickenbocker Bridge). Very protected and a great view of Miami!! Also there is No Name Harbor, protected, located on the south western edge of Key Biscayne. There is a charge there, based on the honor system I believe.

Running out of minutes at the library... will post more as you are working your way south.
